Sessions
Half or full day sessions for CLAY members. This is independent making, not a class. There are no tutors on hand and you work on your own. Everyone starts with an induction so you’re safe with the tools, kilns and materials, but from there you manage your own practice.
Other makers share the space and are happy to chat, but they’re there for their own work, not to teach you the basics. You’ll need to be confident with clay before you join.
Not at that level yet? Get in touch and we’ll talk through teaching options to get you there.
Booking
Sessions and extras are booked and paid for in advance via our online system
Before You Book
Untutored Sessions are for members only. You’ll need to have completed an induction before you can attend, so if you’re new, get in touch first rather than booking straight in. Full terms shown at booking.
Mentoring
One-to-one mentoring is available for makers who want focused support, whether that’s developing a body of work, solving a technical problem or working out what to do next. Mentoring sessions are overseen by Brendan Hesmondhalgh, with more tutors and guest makers joining over time.
Tutors & Technical Support
Brendan Hesmondhalgh
Figurative sculptor, ceramics and bronze
Brendan is a contemporary figurative sculptor, best known for his ceramic and bronze animals. Each piece is built by hand, either from slabs of clay or from sculptural wax. He founded Sculpture Lounge, along with Holmfirth Clay and the Hesmondhalgh Academy, and works from his own studio there, in a busy building of professional artists and makers.
He has been teaching since 2000, running summer schools and workshops for people at every level, from complete beginners to experienced sculptors. They draw students from across the UK and further afield.
Brendan’s approach is practical and friendly. He takes people through making a piece from start to finish, helps them build their technical skills, and pushes them to find their own voice as an artist. The same thinking applies to his one-to-one mentoring, whether you’re starting out or have been working in clay for years.
